10.01.23 YTD Growth %
160 155 -3%

The figures above are as per the club health assessment for January 2023, but that does include Chautari which are no longer serving Lions members.

The year has been challenging for membership, particularly with the Swindon Chautari club being wound up in December 2022. Unfortunately, none of the members who were in good standing at the ending of the club were willing to transfer to other clubs.

Other clubs have reported a total of 9 new members in the current Lions year but 14 dropped so the 7 remaining clubs are facing difficulties. At the recent zone meeting, some clubs reported prospective members so that is a promising sign. There has, however, been a number of losses to higher service.

Fundraising

The clubs are on the whole continuing with established fundraising events. Weather before Christmas unfortunately caused some cancellations, however in the case of Melksham - even with 4 events cancelled - funds raised matched the previous year. Chippenham reported good totals and Swindon's fireworks were staged for the first time since pre-Covid to a great success.

Service

Clubs are still accumulating glasses [spectacles], and are grateful to have an avenue to pass on large numbers at Convention.

Chippenham in particular are still being contacted by housing associations/authorities with requests for carpets - in some cases to replace nearly new flooring. Progress on understanding this issue is needed.

Individual local causes are supported as well as groups, with Devizes for example supporting a Ukrainian family with funeral funds.

Insurance

At the recent zone meeting, frustration was expressed by some clubs around the current insurance situation. One club in the zone has high-profile events which involve alcohol sales, and insurance for this is a particular concern - being both hard to come by and almost prohibitively expensive. Occasionally, cover from alternative providers has proven more cost-effective. RH has promised to have a call if the club wishes and communicate directly with MD to understand the circumstances of the situation.

CIO

Some clubs in the zone are still going through changes associated with CIO status, and meeting challenges - both from the authority responsible for implementing changes for the club as well as the banks involved. RH has assured clubs that help may be available for their situations from District, and to make use of their mentor to understand their obligations and processes.

Social

This is an important part of Lions work, and last year RH organised a successful bowling evening which brought zone clubs together outside of 'the screen' for the first time since before Covid in some cases. A similar event is hoped for this year.

The remaining clubs in the zone are continuing with their efforts, and are wished well with their endeavours.

* Not a real loss as happened in last Lions Year but not recorded until current year. Also were transferred to another Club in our District but in another Zone.

Hayling dropped three members because of health and age grounds.

The Zone does not need any specific assistance from Region and is generally in good health. We are planning two Zone social functions, a trip with lunch on the Watercress Line Steam Railway and a further trip to Brooklands Museum and collection of historic racing cars, motorcycles, aircraft including a visit to Concorde and the sections of the original 1907 racing track that remain. Precise dates are yet to be fixed and if any local zones would like to join us they would be welcome.

Zone D - Rex Sinden

ZONE REPORT FOR YEAR TO DATE 2022/2023

MEMBERSHIP

Zone numbers have remained static at 63 members. Any new members joining being balanced by 7 leavers.

No major membership drives planned, although individual members continue to promote their clubs and attract new members. It is very evident that Clubs are finding a growing band of Lions Supporters who readily help with events and projects but prefer not to take up formal membership.

ZONE ACTIVITY

Two Zone meeting dinners have taken place and a third is planned for March. Whilst these have been enjoyable events they have not been supported to the levels of pre-covid times. Discussions on Lions matters have concluded that there is little enthusiasm for a Zone Project; preferring to put their energies to clubs large projects such as fire-work nights and fayres. The clubs have agreed to support each other where a club individual welfare request is economically too great.

Most Clubs in the zone have planned prostrate screening events which either have been very successful or show considerable promise of so being as demonstrated by the number of pre-bookings.

OTHER MATTERS

Club welfare activity is recommencing, particularly in relation to housing individuals having reached the age of leaving social care, and distressed abused families being re-housed. Similarly fund-raising activity is ramping up and will be most active in the coming months.

CONCLUSIONS

The individual clubs are very active within their respective communities and maintaining their position. However, two clubs have 12 members only and one, although above 15 members, has a very high average age. Membership problems will increase over time.

Zone members Jan 2023 – 131

In my first year as Zone chair I have so far made 4 Club visits, and have the other 2 clubs booked in over the next two months. I am always made to feel welcome, the clubs are all active and it's very encouraging to hear all the positivity. I am lucky enough to be invited on club social and planning events.

I have held 3 well attended Zone meetings, we have another straight after Convention. I have reinstated the Zone Bone competition in an attempt to build friendship and get to know better those we work on Zone projects with.

I have installed a Bra Recycling Bin at the Community Store. The first collection has been made by DPD, 1500 bras, in 4 large boxes. A very satisfying collection of weight and a payment of £48.30 to researching secondary breast cancers.

All Clubs have been instrumental in Fundraising for the new van "Bev" at the Community Store, Christmas food parcels and gifts and supported with general running funds.

All clubs have taken on a role to raise funds for the Zone FunFest event, and all clubs are on the FunFest Committee.

The IT project continues to support those in need, they are looking for more laptops.

Going forwards all clubs will be looking to run ROAR in the next Lionistic year.

Zone H - Christine Asquith

In my first year as ZC, I have communicated with clubs and have visited 2 clubs to date and visiting Eastleigh on the 3rd March.

All Clubs appear to be Reporting and now presenting Activities and Donations in many cases.

I have not arranged a Zone meeting as yet but looking to ensure one is held before the end of the Lionistic Year where hopefully we can decide on a Zone Project.

I have been able to point out to all Clubs in Zone H that there is support available for all if required and happy to take any issues they have to a higher level if requested or required.

I have been able to assist with the role of Secretary in Crofton Lions Club which has a membership of 17 having gained 3 new members- although they have lost 2 due to ill health.

The main activities within this Club is the environment and support within the Community. Weekly they have their Stubbington Clean up and provide Community Events such as Party in the Park and Senior Citizens Party. In August they will also support Fareham Lions in the Organisation of the Stubbington Fayre.

When visiting Swanwick Lions, I found that some Members attend the business meeting in person, but also offer the opportunity for Members to join in by Zoom which offers great flexibility, particularly for Members with Young Families and also Working Members.

Swanwick Lions have 14 Members and have many projects on going in the Community-ie. Building a garden area on the schools premises at Warsah. This is equipped with all gardening tools and a Greenhouse and we look forward to seeing this in full bloom. Also, I attended the PSA Testing which was effectively advertised and set up, accommodating 420 appointments throughout the day.

The Mayor attended and also Mike Golding, taking part in the testing. This was also broadcasted on the TV, with an excellent display of Lions Banners, Flags and Members in their Lion's Uniform.

I am liaising with Swanwick Lions to introduce Roar to 2-3 Schools in the next year.

Eastleigh Lions have maintained their Membership of 20, having lost 2 Members and gained 2.

In my forthcoming visit I am looking forward to hearing of the support provided within their Community as they have Guest Speakers attending. The PSA Testing organised was very successful.

They are a very proactive group supporting MIB, Young Ambassador and also many Charities including Youth and Community Trust, Young Lives vs Cancer, Ukraine support and Brain Tumour Research.

Romsey and Waterside have maintained 11 Members  having lost 2 and gained 2.

I have yet to arrange a visit to their Business Meeting. One of their main activities is to hold the Monthly Bookstall and the support of the Local Food Bank. Romsey and Waterside Lions have also many donations both local and Global amongst which are Romsey Young Carers, Scouts Working Holidays, and the Horill Centre.  The main event of the Year is the Nomansland Village Fayre held every Bank Holiday Monday.

Fareham Lions have 9 Members at Present and working hard to support MIB, Spetrek, Collection of Bottle Tops for local Charities.

Main Event is the Stubbington Fayre on August Bank Holiday Monday where we are supported by Crofton Lions.

We continue to donate to Disaster Funds and liaise with Gosport Voluntary Action Group to support where required.

In June we are following Eastleigh and Swanwick in providing PSA Testing and concentrating on developing the advertising of this to ensure success.

We are very much looking forward to the Senior Citizens Party which we are coinciding with the King's Coronation.

Unfortunately due to the ill health of 1 member we will require support to develop a strategy to cover positions within the Club and increase Membership.

Zone I - Paul Allaway

Due to travel restrictions and the cost of travel I have yet to visit the Clubs in the Zone.

However, DG Dave did attend an informal meeting on the Isle of Wight in November. In addition, Jarvis and the team held a Teams meeting on 15 February with the Isle of Wight Clubs focusing on membership,

Comments and reports have yet to be received from these meetings.
